Understanding How Our Products Work

Choosing the correct protective garment is as important as choosing which welding process to use for your project. If you’re wearing something that is not designed for your application, or wearing it incorrectly, you could be unnecessarily exposing yourself to burn risk. The information on this page is here to help you minimize the risk.

Essential Product Selection & Use Information

Protective clothing is needed to protect the user from UV burn, spatter, molten metal splash, abrasions, and punctures that may occur in many different working environments.

PREMIUM LEATHER CLOTHING
Choosing the proper leather clothing for the user’s application will save time and money. Leather is the preferred choice for heavy spatter and high heat welding. Side split leather is the best choice for leather clothing because it is stronger, more pliable, longer lasting, and has fewer defects than belly or shoulder split.

QUALITY LEATHER CLOTHING
Quality Leather Clothing can be used in the same applications as the Weldas premium line, STEERSOtuff, but without the comfort, safety, and durability features. Weldas golden brown leather clothing is constructed from shoulder split cowhide, Kevlar® stitching, and riveted stress points. An additional feature for jackets and cape sleeves is a roll up collar with hook and loop closure system protecting the neck area from flying debris and UV burns.

FLAME RETARDANT CLOTHING
Flame Retardant Clothing (FR) is designed for light to medium duty welding. It is a light-weight, 100% cotton fabric, with an FR coating applied to the textile. This coating prevents the jacket from combusting and when the ignition source is removed, the textile self extinguishes. Weldas FR complies with applicable ASTM standards and is available in 9oz and 12oz versions.

Weldas® offers many garment styles of FR clothing, with a range of colors that all comply to ASTM D6413-99 flame retardant and washable test methods standard. ASTM International is a group that develops internationally recognized voluntary consensus standards. ASTM D6413-99 test method was developed to test the vertical flame resistance of textiles, measuring for such variables as flame resistance, after-flame, and after-glow characteristics. These test methods are performed after many washing cycles to ensure the FR coating is still functional. Weldas FR clothing is recommended for 25 commercial or 50 home washings.

Weldas® brand COOL FR jackets come with a unique spatter guard system. The spatter guard is held in place by hook & loop fasteners, and prevents sparks and flying debris from entering the jacket between “snap gaps” that commonly occur during normal wear. All COOL FR jacket snaps are electrically insulated to prevent electric current from passing through the snap to the user’s body. Weldas® FR jackets, coats, and cape sleeves come with a specially designed under-arm sport cut and hemmed collar, along with an inside pocket.

Features and Benefits: The advantages of the FR clothing versus leather clothing is lighter weight, cooler and more breathability.

Weldas caps come in three different styles and multiple patterns. The styles are a standard cap, beanie, and the boiler maker style. All caps except the beanie come with an athletic mesh lining that allows sweat to evaporate & ventilate quickly to help keep you cool. Caps offer additional protection to keep sparks and debris away from skin contact.

Weldas doorags are a one size fit all and offered in multiple patterns. All doorags come with an athletic mesh lining that allows sweat to evaporate & ventilate quickly to help keep you cool. Doorags offer additional protection to keep sparks and debris away from skin contact.

Winter liners come in different styles and range from moderate cold protection, to severe cold protection. The hoods range from a nape coverage to a full neck flap. Each winter liners back head strap is offset to accommodate ratchet style headgear as well.

Weldas® offers three different types of patented sweatbands, brand named SWEATSOpad®. Non- suspended headgear such as a welding helmet use part # 20-3100V, suspended headgear for hardhats part # 20-3200V, and traditional style sweatbands with elastic band part # 20-3303. The SWEATSOpad® for the hard hat and welding helmet are both flame retardant.

LEATHER GRADES & TERMINOLOGY
Leather is tanned and separated into a grain layer and a flesh layer, commonly called split. The grain layer has a smooth side and suede side. Both sides of the split cowhide are suede.

Different portions of the hide have different characteristics. The side offers the best strength and pliability, the shoulder offers good strength, and the belly is most economical.
